Spiral XII: Space Between Heaven and Earth is an exploration of death, remembrance and the struggle to move forward, which have been inescapable elements of the Cambodian condition over the last 38 years. For Chinary Ung, who lost much of his family to the Khmer Rouge genocide, and Sophiline Cheam Shapiro, who is herself a survivor of those “killing fields,” their music and dance is a way of wrestling with the meaning and impact of a failed society and also a way of transcending it. Through their art, they connect a deeply personal lament to the resilient human spirit.
